Founder's Story

I'm Matt Rifino. I'm a music mixer — over 4,000 songs, live network television, five Emmy Awards, and thirty years at the console — and now I'm building Rifino Timepieces too.

Mixing started the way a lot of obsessions do — I was 8 years old and took apart my parents' stereo because I wanted to know how it worked. That question never really went away. Thirty years later it's the same question, just pointed at a different machine.

From hobby to brand, fast

I didn't even own a watch two years ago. I got into them about a year before a trip back to Italy to visit family. I started trying to build my own three months before that trip — sketching, researching movements, figuring out what I'd want if nobody else was going to make it. The trip is what turned it into something else entirely. Standing in Rionero and Vieste, my grandparents' actual hometowns, not names I picked off a map, I didn't quite realize yet that this was no longer a hobby.

What thirty years in audio actually taught me

Mixing isn't about stamping your own sound on a record. The best note I ever got early in my career was that my job was to get out of the way — to capture the raw emotion and energy that makes a song connect, not impose something of my own on top of it. That takes real technical mastery: knowing the gear cold, understanding signal flow until it's instinct, solving a problem in the two seconds you actually have before a live mix goes out to millions of people. But the technical skill was never the whole job — knowing when to be invisible is harder than knowing which knob to turn.

Building Rifino asks for both of those same muscles. The technical side is obvious: tolerances, movement choice, case construction — the things that have to be exactly right or the watch just doesn't work. But there's a creative decision behind every one of those choices too — which movement earns its place in which watch, which details are honest and which are just noise, what a watch should actually say about the place it's named for instead of just how it looks in a photo.

Why I'm building this the way I am

Every name on this site is a real place that means something to me. Every movement spec is the actual movement, not a vague “premium Japanese movement” dodge. Every manufacturing partner was chosen after months of vetting, not the lowest quote. None of that is a marketing strategy — it's just the only way I know how to build something, after thirty years of being trusted to get it right the first time, live, with everyone watching.
